My Story
I started training in 1965. Let's see....how many years is that? In 2015, that will be 50 years!! For the record I have never tried steroids or Hgh. All the gains have been 100% natural. I have been able to get back into shape time and time again even in my 60's, because I have always believed that a NATURAL bodybuilder lives a longer and healthier life.
I thank my parents for my genes and God for my willpower, because without willpower and discipline you will end up taking the steroid shortcuts and think you are "da man", when in reality you are now only on the fast-track to old age, health problems and maybe even death. Steroids will age and kill people! Google "dead bodybuilders". You can take that one to the bank! Take a look around at anyone who has used them and see how they look in their mid-fifties. |
1965. At 12 yrs old I stood barely 5' 2" tall. Small-framed, I played soccer and had no
interest in getting big, until I saw Jack Lalanne on TV. (Wow!....I could look like that?)
I purchased his rubber tubing - it was actually solid, not hollow - and started my journey.
One of the best decisions of my life.
Then, I bought the Larry Scott puzzle of him posing in that famous one arm bicep side shot.
I was addicted.
Soon after, I bought my first barbell set and started working out in my bedroom using
my 18" x 32" top of my desk for the bench press. There were no video games or internet
back then.

1969. I tried gymnastics in grades 9-11 but drifted back to weight training after school
each day. At age 16, I had sixteen inch arms and could bench press 165 lbs.
Here, I'm on the right. I would eat a whole chicken, a salad, a block of Swiss cheese,
and I'd still be hungry. My poor dad couldn't keep up with the food bill, and my mom
was always in the kitchen cooking.

1970. At 17 I entered my first competition, winning first place and most muscular.
In this pic, I am doing a "vacuum", which today I couldn't do for love or
money. This front double bicep is overdone as I brought my shoulders
too high. I posed better than this.

1970. Here is my back double bicep at age 17. Notice the weak tiny calves and tan lines. (Yes, I'm white,
and I spend over $500 a year trying to get dark!). Over the years I tried to turn my weaknesses into
strengths.

1971. At 18, I won the same contest for the second time.
1975. Here, at age 22, I had stopped working out for 3 years. I trained very light again
when I as 23, and then stopped completely as family obligations took priority.
I have six children. I didn't resume training until 1997, when I was 44. And sure
enough, muscle memory shifted into gear.
In 1985, I formed the Fitness Bureau Inc. to train fitness instructors and the Aerobics International Association. The association was too ahead of its time and didn't last long.

1997. At 44, in Nassau, Bahamas.
1999. In the Philippines, with a stomach the size of the equator.
2000-2001, one year transformation. At left, I was totally out of
shape. At right, after a year of healthy eating, the right supplements,
Cardio and pumping iron. From a 39 inch waist down to 28 inches.
My Cardio consisted of running up 12 flights of stairs 3 times a week.

2001. 48 years old with a 28 inch waist.....drug-free.
2001.
2007. At 54, with an inset pic of me at 18..... (3 x 18 = 54). Very few people
know how to train the lower part of the bicep and the lateral (outside) part of
the quads.
Rule of thumb: if the width of your face (looking straight on) is 1/2 as wide as the
distance between your neck and the edge of your shoulders, you look like
you are working out.

2007. 54 and pretty lean.
2011. 58, at Venice Gold's. I stopped training in May of that year for various reasons.
2013. This horrifying shot was taken in May. Argh!!!! I look like death
warmed over - this is the result of a two year lay-off. Age 60, and looking it!
Most people at that age just give up when they get this out of shape. Not me.
I know what my body can do.
I stepped back in the gym on July 16th, 2013.

2013, November. After only 4 months back in the gym, some signs of progress.
2013, December. Right after a shoulder workout. How to get the shoulders to
appear like coconuts is easy if you know what you are doing.
(Hint: Isolate front, top, side, back).

2014, Jan 1. Malibu Beach. And I ain't done yet. The waist has to go
back down to 28. Here it's 34. Everyone I ask to guess my age
takes me for 45.
Thank you.

2014. Only those who have been able to transform
their bodies can appreciate the sheer joy and
satisfaction one feels from having accomplished
seemingly the impossible. I see this and I know
what my weak parts are: abs , legs, forearms,
chest, and delts. The calves are now one of my
strengths. Arms were always the easiest to build.

2014. January 28. Still lots of work ahead. I'm taking a week off for a Pit Stop, to allow my body to recuperate and heal. The 1:2 bicep/tricep ratio is not there, right now it's more like 1:1. Lats are not maximized. Front squats are needed to bring the front sweep in the quads, and abs are a long ways out (a diet and cardio issue). It will take another year to get denser. Yes, these things take time.

Rest in Peace Larry. Larry Scott was probably the first bodybuilder I saw in a magazine cover, growing up. I'll never have 20 inch arms, and I'm not sure I would want arms that can't bend to scratch my head.
